Aperture 2.1 from Apple

Aperture, is awesomes like a million hot-dogs, sometimes it will import your pictures and fill your hard-drive by copying them into a database, sometimes, it will leave them in the location, sometimes you will have to reinstall it because it refuses to import anything and you will have your photos spread across two 40gb databases on your laptop and the rest on your USB Drive, sometimes you will have to delete one of these databases in order to have any space left on your laptop, and sometimes you will lose a load of photos….

Central Station NYC, Dark Hedges Armoy, i only have <1mb jpegs to remember you by now, the original RAW files have gone to the great trashcan in the sky.

I still have most of my NYC photos, but these, from my last day, were very nearly lost… but i am very very gutted, i’m actually scared to go through and try to find what i have lost.

There is a curious feeling that you get using a computer every so often, it feels like an empty bowling ball being removed from your stomach, sometimes it comes when you hit the ‘reply-all’ button on an email instead of ‘reply’ and sometimes it comes when you realise that you have lost a lot of data. Does this have a name?

That sounds horrific…there’s nothing worse than losing photos (or work). We met a trainee photographer while we were travelling in India last year She had been away for something like two months, all around SE Asia, and in a very blonde moment had formatted her memory card – the one containing most of her pictures.
What’s the answer – to download to your laptop as you go along, to keep a stock of memory cards and change regularly, to use pen drives…? It would be useful to know what you think as I’m going away for a month in a couple of months’ time and am already thinking about my images

dunno ciara – certainly 4 and even 8gb cards are becoming more affordable to have a few on you, but i find that if i just have one card in the camera i know where i am – otherwise i lose track of what i have written off to computer. I’m just back from photoing a wedding in portugal and with shooting RAW files i did 14gb in 3 days, so with that kind of size I took a WD passport to write off to – these draw power through the USB cable so you don’t need a herd of cables and also its small enough to carry in my european man-purse away from my computer so if i lose my computer at least i have my data.

All this is irrelevant if you are an eidgit and don’t know how to use the software, like me in this case – Aperture asks if you know what your doing, but it can’t tell if you are lying.
