14 Welsh 3,00ers

That was the plan anyway… we had planned to attempt the 14 Welsh hills over 3,000 feet in one bank holiday weekend… and we were going great – on the first day we did the Snowdon Horseshoe, which is pictured above (click the pic for bigger) and it was a beautiful walk on a beautiful day -

the route was up Crib Goch (923m), first time i have ever done this unreal ridge walk, but i doubt it will be the last and on to snowdons sister peak, Garnedd Ugain (1,065 m), snowdon itself and back over the shorter ridge of Y Lliwedd (898 m)

a really really great walk and can’t believe i have never done it before and 3 of the 14 peaks complete

The next day was a very different story, with overcast conditions and heavy fog/cloud meaning visibilty was low and a quite depressing trudge to complete 10 more peaks…. i actually wanted to sack it off – nothing physically wrong just utterly bored of the conditions… and i think a little annoyed with myself for entering into some kind of ‘tick-list’ walking where i was scarcely aware of what peak i was on but knew that it was another one off the list…. not something that i ever wanted to do – but we carried on and i must admit spirits lifted and the company was good so not all lost and we got our hills ticked off.

on monday we discussed the posibilty of completing the round with 4 more peaks on the glyderau but we decided to leave it… My reason for this was the weather – we have done the glyderau a couple of times before when visibilty has been poor and the bits around Castell-y-Gwent just aren’t fun in poor conditions but it is an area i really want to see in good conditions – so i decided to leave it until then…

so i have now been up the 14 highest peaks in wales, albeit not in one weekend… but i’m not sure that is the best way to enjoy them tbh.

Oh, and for the 3rd year running i celebrated my birthday in Wales… becoming something of a tradition that one
